Your hero section is a filter, not a slogan

Most homepages open with a sentence that could belong to any company in the category. Here is the test we run on every hero we write, and why failing it costs you qualified leads rather than traffic.

Open ten agency homepages and nine of them start with a sentence like We build digital experiences that drive growth. It is grammatical, it is confident, and it tells a visitor nothing they can act on. The reason this keeps happening is that the hero gets written as a slogan, which is a branding job, when it is really a filter, which is a sales job.

The swap test

Take your headline and swap in a direct competitor's name. If the sentence still works, it is not doing anything. Websites that work, designs that convert only survives that test because the rest of the screen commits to what BLANQ actually does: conversion-focused builds, measured. A headline that survives the swap test on its own is rare and usually very specific.

The version most businesses need is not clever. It is a plain statement of what you make, who it is for, and what changes as a result. Wholesale ordering software for independent roasteries outperforms Brewing better business every single time, because the first one lets the wrong visitor leave and the right one keep reading.

Letting the wrong visitor leave is the point

This is the part that makes people uncomfortable. A hero that repels badly matched visitors is doing its job. If you sell six-week builds starting at fifteen thousand dollars, a visitor with a two thousand dollar budget costs you a discovery call, a proposal and two follow-up emails before they say no. Saying so on the first screen saves both of you.

We watch this play out in the numbers on almost every project. Enquiry volume falls, sometimes by a third. Enquiries that turn into work go up. The clients who track it properly find their cost per qualified lead drops even as raw form fills decline, and the ones who only watch form fills panic for about two weeks.

What actually belongs on the first screen

Four things, in this order, and nothing else:

  • What it is. The plainest possible description of the thing you sell.
  • Who it is for. A qualifier that a wrong-fit visitor will recognise as excluding them.
  • The change. One specific outcome, ideally a number you can defend.
  • One action. A single primary button. A secondary link is fine. A third option is a decision you are pushing onto a stranger.

The subheadline is where the proof goes

Headlines are too short to be credible. The two lines underneath are where you earn the claim: name the constraint you work within, the kind of client you work with, or the measurable thing you move. We build conversion-focused sites for Quebec businesses, with performance budgets written into the contract is a sentence a competitor cannot copy without lying.

A test that costs nothing

Read your hero out loud to someone who does not know what you do, then ask them two questions: what do we sell, and would you be a good customer. If either answer takes more than a sentence, the hero is not finished. This is a fifteen minute test and we have never once run it without changing the copy afterwards.

What a chatbot should actually do for a small business

Most small business chatbots fail for the same reason: they were given a personality instead of a job. The ones that work are narrow, boring, and know exactly when to stop talking.
